      Maida Hart Wernicke Johnston '38, August 24, 2005, in San Mateo, California. Maida attended Reed for two years, earning a BA from the University of California. Said to be a patron of the arts and a unique individual, Maida was a "part-time" Scientologist, who also wrote for the Pacifica Tribune. In 1940, She married Thomas E. Johnston, who predeceased her.

      JOHNSTON, Maida Hart - Passed away peacefully in San Mateo, CA on August 24, 2005 at the age of 89 years. Beloved wife of the late Thomas E. Johnston who predeceased her 16 years ago. Born a Wernicke in Portland, OR, she had the distinction of having lived in Pacifica, CA, where she adored to walk and beachcomb. A graduate of Reed College; a patron of the arts; she was a very unique and Bohemian lady, known for having a soft spot for people down on their luck. Remembered by many as a loving, caring individual. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 P.M., Thursday, September 1, 2005 at the Sneider & Sullivan Funeral Home, 977 So. El Camino Real, San Mateo, CA. Donations in her memory to the San Mateo Co. S.P.C.A. preferred.
