  from "San Jose Mercury News", 10 Mar 1954 (newsbank.com) MORGAN HILL - Services for Preston R. Thomas, 77, long-time Morgan Hill rancher, will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. in Johnson Funeral Home here. Interment will be in Oak Hill Memorial Park. Thomas died Tuesday at his Oak Hill Flat ranch, eight miles east of Morgan Hill. He had lived there since 1878, when his family moved to Santa Clara County from Placer County, where he was born. He was a member of the board of trustees of Live Oak Union High School from 1925 to 1934. He was a charter member of Morgan Hill Lodge, IOOF, since combined with Gilroy lodge, and of Santa Clara County Cattlemen's Association. He also was a member of California National Cattlemen's Association, and Modern Woodmen of America. Thomas attended the old Soda Springs School, one-room structure located on his family's property, a mile and a half from the ranch house. He leaves his widow, Lucie, four sons, Leon R. Thomas, Willows, Harold F. Thomas, San Jose, and George P. and Eugene L. Thomas, both of Morgan Hill, a brother, Newton E. Thomas, Gilroy, a sister, Mrs. Clara F. Brunst, San Jose, and eight grandchildren.
