  Notes	from "The Sterling Genealogy" by Albert Mack Sterling, 1909 LYDIA STERLING, b. at Sterling City, Apr. 1, 1747; m. there Feb. 20, 1766, William Perkins, b. in Lyme, Thursday, Oct. 20, 1743, son of Abraham and Sarah (Cogswell) Perkins. Capt. Perkins, as he was called, was a tanner and shoemaker. In February, 1793, he removed from Lyme to Hartland, Vt., with his two sons and a daughter, again removing in 1801 to South Woodstock, Vt., where his brother-in-law, Joseph Sterling, had settled twenty years before. Lydia Sterling d. in Lyme, Apr. 11, 1793. William m. 2d, in South Woodstock, Oct. 11, 1813, Mrs. Irene Smith, wid. of Stephen Smith of Hartland. He d. in South Woodstock, June 24, 1826.   from "Connecticut, U.S., Town Marriage Records, pre-1870 (Barbour Collection), Lyme Vital Records 1667-1852 (ancestry.com) William, s. Abraham & Elizabeth, b. Oct. 20, 1743 from "The family of John Perkins of Ipswich, Massachusetts" William (Abraham, Abraham, Isaac, John, John) was born in Lyme, Conn., Oct. 20,1743. He married, first, Lydia Sterling, Feb.20, 1766 in Lyme., Conn.; she died April 11,1793. He married second, Irene Smith, Oct 11, 1813. She was the widow of Stephen Smith, of Hartland VT,. and was the mother of Elder Elias Smith, Rev. Uriah Smith, and Dr. Benjamin Ransom Smith. Capt. Perkins, as he was called, removed from Lyme, CT., with 2 sons and a daughter, to Hartland Vt., in February, 1793, and again to South Woodstock, Vt. in 1801. He was a tanner by trade, and also a shoemaker and pursued both branches of business. He died in South Woodstock, June 24, 1826, at the age of eighty-two years. His marriages with his two wives are quaintly recorded in his family Bible, thus: "Williams Perkins was married to Lydia Sterling, Feb. 20,1766 which became his true and loving wife. William Perkins was married to Irene Smith, Oct 11, 1813, which became his true and loving wife." from Revolutionary War Pension file of John Minor (Fold3) While residing at Lyme, Connecticut, he enlisted, the February under Lieutenant William Perkins and served six months with the Connecticut Troops assisting in the construction of Fort Trumbull. from Revolutionary War Pension file of Seth Sterling (Fold3) in the year 1779 he resided with his father in the Town of Lyme County of New London State of Connecticut and belonged to Capt. William Perkins company of State Militia in said Lyme that from his best recollection at the first of May 1779 he was drafted from said Perkins company as a private soldier to serve sex months as a Militia Man and that as near as he can recollect at the middle of May 1779 he was called and taken by Sargent Ely and marched direct to New London Connecticut and joined Col Wells Regiment of the Connecticut State Troops in Capt Lees company and was stationed at said New London till the latter part of November following and was then dismissed during which time at New London he helped finished and complete a Fort and Barracks and mount the Cannon on said Fort.
