GEORGE CLARKE WOODS was born February 9, 1921, enlisted December 14, 1940 as a Seaman Apprentice and went through boot camp at the Great Lakes Naval Base, Great Lakes, Illinois. He went through Hospital Corps School at the Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia, and did duty at various Naval Hospitals in the United States before being assigned to Lion Outfit in Norfolk, Virginia. George was transferred to the Mine Sweep Force in the Pacific, where he was exposed to tuberculosis in 1945. The Mine Sweeper he was riding was blown up, but they managed to patch it up and get back to the States. George was assigned to an AKA heavy attack transport, and carried cargo to China. He came back to the States where he was shipped to the I" Marine Division in. China. His medical records caught up with him in 1946, stating he had tuberculosis. He was sent to the Navy hospital tuberculosis ward in the Corona Naval Hospital in Corona, California, from which he was transferred to Lake County T.B. Sanitarium near Waukegan, Illinois. He received a 100% medical disability discharge May 1947. He spent time in a VA (Veterans' Administration) Hospital in the Waukegan area.
