"Dr. Reuben Woods One of Oldest Professional Men in Quincy, Dies"
For More Than Forty Years Practiced in Payson and Quincy, Being Known as One of Leading Eye and Ear Specialists in This Section of the Country - Had Distinguished Record, as Surgeon With Union Army During the Civil War. ----
Dr. Reuben Woods, one of the oldest and most widely known members of his profession in Illinois, died at his home in Quincy, 1807 Jersey street, at 10 o'clock Wednesday evening at the advanced age of eighty-eight years. He retired from active practice several years ago and for many months the infirmities of advancing years have confined him to his home. With characteristic patience he bore the affliction of his steadily failing strength, ever thoughtful for those about him, greeting his friends with a smile and a flash of his native wit, ever grateful for the kindly offices of those who cared for him. He was spared from suffering during his illness and when the final summons came he quietly closed his eyes in eternal sleep."
Reuben was a prominent ear, nose and throat specialist. He was a surgeon during the Civil War and among the first to use anethesia during the Civil War. One of Founders of Quincy Humane Society and member of the University Club of Chicago. - from "Illinois Deaths and Stillbirths, 1916-1947" (familysearch.org)
