  from "The San Francisco Call", 31 Oct 1900 (newspapers.com) VALLEJO, Oct. 30. - Charles Stratton, pay yeoman of the Independence, who underwent a surgical operation during the latter part of last week to relieve an acute obstruction of the bowels, died at the naval hospital this afternoon.
