Mr. Dayton was married at Waukon, Iowa, May 24, 1874, to Miss Mary M. Wilcox, a daughter of Cortes and Rebecca (Palmer) Wilcox. She was born at Fort Edward, New York, July 13, 1844. When she was six months of age her parents moved to Greenwich, New York, and there her early womanhood was spent. Her father, Cortes Wilcox, was born in Greenwich, New York, March 4, 1812, and died May 12, 1859. His wife was born in Morristown, St. Lawrence county, New York, June 17, 1823; she died August 26, 1867. Their children were Ruby Lavinia, Mary M. (Mrs. Dayton) and Cortes Joel.
