From The Dental Cosmos by By J. D. White, John Hugh McQuillen, George Jacob Ziegler, James William White, Edward Cameron Kirk, Lovick Pierce Anthony, Published by S. S. White Dental Manufacturing Co., 1896 DR. EVERETT M. BAKER, DIED, in Medina, Orleans Co., N. Y., February 3, 1896, of pneumonia, Dr. EVERETT MILFOLD BAKER, aged forty-one years. Dr. Baker was born in the town of Cambria, Niagara county, N. Y., April 7, 1855. In early life he evinced a fondness for study and developed correct and exemplary habits. Upon leaving the district school he entered the Lockport Union School, where he finished his preliminary education. Having early chosen dentistry as his life work, he entered the dental office of Drs. Balcom & Dickinson, in Lockport, for a term of years, subsequently completing his preparation for practice by attending the Philadelphia Dental College, from which he graduated in the spring of 1877. The same year Dr. Baker opened an office in Medina, where by his industry and skill, added to a pure and blameless life, he came into possession of a large and lucrative practice. He was a member of the Eighth District Dental Society, and at the time of his death its corresponding secretary. He commanded the respect and esteem of his fellow-associates for his manly and courteous bearing, as well as for his interest in the affairs of the society. He was an officer in the Presbyterian Church, the Young Men's Christian Association, and the Masonic Lodge. Dr. Baker leaves a widow, with one daughter and two sons. At 5 pm suffering from a severe cold, he reluctantly canceled engagements with his patients, when he was (?)...(?) and pneumonia developed, (?) falally, after less than a week's sickness. In the death of Dr. Baker our village losses one of its noblest and best citizens. No one was more universally beloved and esteemed, and few are the men with friends so numerous as our deceased brother. Never have we had the pleasure of the friedship of one who came nearer to the ideal manhood we all aspire to, but so few attain, as was exemplified in the person of Dr. Everett M. Baker. His demise will be most keenly felt, not only by the afflicted family, but by a wide circle of friends, and there will be a void in every relation of life in which he was wont to mingle. | Baker, Dr. Everett Milford (I31)

6576 | From LeMars Sentinel, February 25, 1930 HOLD DIAMOND DAY GATHERING, FRIENDS WILL HONOR STUDENT AND SCHOLAR REARED ON PLYMOUTH PRAIRIES Many early residents of Plymouth County remember the Varnum family which settled in Fredonia Township away back in the seventies, and were contemporanous with the Reeves family, the Knowltons, the Winslows, Webb Freeman and Case, and others. The Varnums had a family of six boys who were brought up and reared in Fredonia township. Walter Scott Varnum was the eldest of these boys and is now living in California. His friends and college mates are planning to celebrate a diamond jubilee for him in April on the occasion of his seventy-fifth birthday. Walter S. Varnum graduated from Hillsdale College, Michigan, in 1880, with a degree of bachelor of arts and pursued the profession of teaching in various institutions in Kansas, Arizona and California. Following the death of his wife, Alice Case, an early Fredonia township resident, he traveled extensively over the Pacific Coast. Mr. Varnum was admitted to the bar while living in Kansas. He spends his time in the country in southern California with his typewriter, books and magazine, and is largely interested in methods for improving the education of children. The celebration which is planned in his honor will be held in the home of his brother, George Varnum, who is a practicing attorney in Anaheim, California. Another brother, James Varnum, lives at Centerville, S.D. Henry Newell, of this city, is a cousin of the Varnum family. The mother of W.S. Varnum and one his brothers are buried in the LeMars cemetery. | Varnum, Walter Scott (I2759)

6577 | from List of Mayors of Oakland, California (wikipedia.com) Morcom was born March 3, 1874 in Grass Valley, California, but little is known of his upbringing. He had established himself as proprietor of Morcom's picture frame and art store at 1724 Broadway by 1920. In 1931, he was the first Oakland mayor ever to be selected by his fellow council members and not by popular vote, under a charter reform meant to reform the excesses of the Davie era. However, Morcom quit as mayor after only one term, stating that a businessman could not afford to serve as mayor, with a monthly stipend of $100 a month plus $15 per council meeting, and that he did believe in the new council-manager form of municipal government (council-manager government), but that the mayor should be popularly elected and properly paid. Morcom returned to the city council, as councilman-at-large, from 1941 to 1953. In 1933 he planted the first rose in the municipal rose garden, which was renamed the Morcom Amphitheater of Roses in 1953. He lived at 4231 Lakeshore Avenue as mayor and up to his death on October 4, 1955. | Morcom, Frederick Nicholas “Fred” (I7487)
