DEATH SUMMONS MRS. ELIZABETH ARNERICH
Respected Pioneer Resident of Santa Clara County Passes to Final Rest.
Funeral Servied to Be Held Tomorrow Morning at St. Joseph's Church.
In the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Arnerich, who passed away near Guadalupe Friday, at the advanced age of 78 years, three months and 21 days, Santa Clara County has suffered the loss of another respected pioneer resident. Mrs. Arnerich was born in Clovernel, Tipperary County, Ireland in 1832. In 1840, with her parents, she moved to Sydney, Australia, where they lived ten years. In 1850 they took passage on the bark "William and Mary" and sailed for San Francisco, coming around Cape Horn. On arriving at their destination her father procured a tent, which he pitched temporarily on a point of land jutting our of Broadway and Telegraph Hill, called Clark's Point or Bechew Landing. A short time afterwards they obtained the sections of a house from Australia, which they soon erected and occupied until 1852, when they came to San Jose and engaged in the butcher business. Her parents soon afterward entered a homestead n the ranch afterward known as Wheeler Ranch, north of her present property. The family lived there until her father's death and soon afterward Mrs. Arnerich married. Her mother then sold the ranch and came to live with daughter, as her sons were then in homes of their own. Mrs. Arnerich (then Mrs. Elizabeth Moylan, wife of Edward Moylan of San Francisco), married Mateo Arnerich, who had been a friend of her family since they first engaged in stockraising and farming in the same part of the county in which they have always lived. In 1870 Mrs. and Mrs. Arnerich moved to what is now known as the old homestead in Union District, now planted in vineyard. Her surviving relatives are her children, John T. Arnerich, attorney-at-law, San Francisco; Mrs. Catherine M. Garlinger, San Jose, Miss Elizabeth H. Arnerich, ex-Assemblyman M.E. Arnerich, Paul J. Arnerich, Deputy United States Marshal, Miss Isabelle A. Arnerich and Miss Margaret U. Arnerich, her brother William D. Browne, who was for a number of years Chief of Police and Chief of the Fire Department in San Jose; Edward D. Browne of Spokane, Wash., and eight grandchildren. She was a long and patient sufferer and her death will be greatly mourned by the many who knew her. She was ever ready to offer a helping hand to those who were in need. The funeral will be held tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock from her late residence near Guadalupe, thence to St. Joseph's Church, this city, where a requiem high mass be be celebrated for the repose of her soul. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

GAS BLAST FATAL TO ART PERKINS Jr.
Arthur B. Perkins, oldes son of Mr. and MRs. A/B. Perkins was killed Sunday noon by an explosion of fire damp gas in a shallow well which he was cleaning out on his cattle ranch near Durango, Colorado. His wife, Mrs. Maxine Prager Perkins, made a heroic attempt to get him out of the well, was herself overcome by the extremely toxic gas, and was taken to a Durango hospital in a very serious condition. The stricken parents at home here, know only such details of the tragic affair as they were able to glean by long distance telephone calls to Durango. The remains were to be brought back to Newhall by a brother, Valentine, following funeral services in the Colorado city, either Wednesday or Thursday of this week. The accident was a strange one. The area in which the ranch is located is a coal bearing section, but it is considered remarkable that the dreaded fire damp, or methane gas should accumulate in a comparatively shallow well, such as the one on which young Perkins was working. The deadly, inflammable gas was touched off either by a spark from the motor of the well pump, or possibly by the lighting of a cigarette by the victim. Exact particulars of the fatality awaited the arrival of the brother.
WIFE TRIED TO RESCUE
It was not know at first whether young Perkins was down in the well or close to the top when the explosion took place. His wife and father-in-law were in the the ranch house at the time. They rushed out and saw no sign of him. Mrs. Perkins apparently realized that he was in the well and climbed down after him. She in tunr had to be rescued by her father. Arthur B. Perkins Jr., was born May 4, 1918, in Los Angeles. He attended Newhall Grammar School, San Fernando High School, A.V. Junior College, California Polytech and Los Angeles City College. Previous to World War II he assited his father in the operation of the the Newhall Water Co., and wa a leading spirit in the formation of a Junior Chamber of Commerce.
HELPED REVIVE REDEO
It was Art Junior's idea to try and revive the Saugus Rodeos. long a nationally know sports spectacle, but discontinued in 1937 after disastrous floods made the stadium unusable. The idea caught on, an incorporated body was organized by Attorney Arthur C. Miller, and a very fine rodeo was put on in the flats of Placerita Canyon in 1939. In 1943 young Arthur served with the U.S. Army. In December of 1945 he was united in marriage with Miss Maxine Prager, the ceremony being performed by Rev. John Christensen in Community Church. Three years ago the young couple acquired a cattle ranch near Durango, and had lived there since.
MADE MANY FRIENDS
Of cheerful. friendly, energetic nature, young Art, as he was familiarly known, made a friend of everyone he knew. He was ever in the forefront of constructive activities and gave freely of his time and efforts to any worthy cause. He was a sort of spark plug in the friendly, busy community life of pre-war Newhall, and his departure created a vacancy noted by all. Left to mourn are his parents, his brother Valentine, who lives in Detroit, and his brother Richard, now at the family home after completing a term of military service in Korea. In addition to the immediate family, every young person in the area of his age, who know him, experienced a deep sense of personal loss. The family request that no flowers be sent. Anyone wishing to do so, may sen da contribution to any organization, hospital, or institution engaged in philanthropic work.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU HELD DOWN YOUR POSITION?
Corinth, Dec. 15.- (From time to time The Saratogian will publish stories of Corinth residents who have been active in one position for a period of over fifteen years. The following is a short sketch of the business experience of a William H. Mead.)
A period of thirty-five years in the grocery and drygoods business ins the experience of wWilliam H. Mead, proprietor of the Palmer stores in Palmer avenue. In 1886, Mr Mead came to Palmer from Saratoga Springs and purchased a grocery store in lower Palmer avenue which he conducted for over twenty years. After selling the grocery establishment to H.B. Hall, Mr. Mead bought the two buildings in Palmer avenue owned by Mrs. J.H. Jacobie and then began his career as a drygoods merchant. The buildings, which are in the same location, have been carrying a line of drygoods for the past fifteen year under the management of Mr. Mead, and while the one on the east side deals in men's furnishings, the one on the west side handles a line of ladies' and children's wearing apparel. Since Mr. Mead took over the management of the Palmer stores in 1908, and for many years previous there has been a United states post office in the building on the west side. Mr. Mead, despite his age, is still very active in sports. He loves horse racing, delights in hunting, and is well known in this vicinity for raising blue tick hounds. Several years ago, Mr. Mead purchsed "Black Prince,: from stables at Valleys Falls and in a comparatively short time, the horse was one of the fastest in the north section of the county. "Black Prince" was entered in four $1,000 stake races in Eastern Pennsylvania and several events in New Jersey. Mr. Mead is still active along the hourse racing line and is owner of "Blitta," probably the fastest pacer in Corinth. At present, "Blitta" is preparting for ice racing during the coming winter months.

NICHOLAS PALMER DEAD
Was Well Known Resident of the Town of Moreau
Nicholas Palmer, one of the oldest residents of the town of Moreau, died Tuesday morning at the old Palmer homestead, where he had always lived. He never married, but made his home with an aged maiden sister, Jane Palmer. A few days ago the sister was examined as to her competency in managing her affairs. The jury decided that she was entirely competent to look after her business, as well as that of her brother. Mr. Palmer was seventy-two years old. A short time ago he became ill of pneumonia. For a number of years he and his sister had had the idea that their farm property was ideally situated for a public park, although it was several miles below South Glens Falls and about fifteen miles north of this village. The funeral was held this afternoon at 2 o'clock.
