5162 | from "The Saline Observer", 10 Apr 1890 (posted on findagrave.com) Grand Rapids, April 2. - Fred B. Perkins, aged 46, a man well and favorably known in this city, committed suicide this morning by hanging. He has been living alone with his mother, and arose early this morning apparently in the best of spirits. About 9 o'clock he asked her what kind of meat he should get for dinner. She told him to suit himself, and he started out. Two hours later the aged mother went to the cellar to get some vegetables for dinner and was horrified to see her son's body dangling from a rope from a beam under the floor. Close by lay his cuffs and a cigar he had lighted upon leaving the house, with even the ashes undisturbed. The coroner decided that an inquest was unnecessary, the evidence being too plain, and decided it a case of suicide. Perkins was formerly a successful merchant in Albany, and latterly in the grocery business here. He leaves about $20,000, well invested. He has a divorced wife living in Oregon, and while some of his friends are at a loss to account for a cause for the tragedy, others think domestic troubles induced despondency and temporary insanity. | Perkins, Frederick Barker (I16907)

5190 | from "The San Francisco Bay Region" Vol. 3 page 23-24 by Bailey Millard. Published by The American Historical Society, Inc. 1924. WILLIAM P. CAUBU is a lawyer, practicing at the bar of San Francisco, who has in him that rare combination of qualities which approach quite near to the ideal in the profession, and insure success. He has a keen, alert and vigorous mind, broad and comprehensive in its grasp, yet masterful and careful of detail; and with sure precision he goes straight to the heart of a proposition submitted to him, and seldom does he err in his judgment. He has always been a close student and tireless worker. Keeping pace with the rapidly moving and ever-widening current of the law, he has not a little aided in the true development and proper application of the eternal legal principles to the changed and changing conditions of society with its concomitant, manifold complexities and perplexities. His own clear ideas, accurate judgment and logical deductions are in argument highly supplemented and enforced by an evident earnestness and honesty of purpose that carries conviction to his bearers, and usually brings victory to his side of the cause. he never advises a client until he is sure of his ground, and then his judgment is given impartially in accordance with his view of the law applicable to the matter. But once his services are enlisted in behalf of a client his powers of mind, coupled with his wide knowledge of the law, and his experience in its practice, and his strong personality, are applied to that client's cause with all the vigor and earnestness, diligence and devotion in his power. A son of the Golden West, Mr. CAUBU was born at San Francisco, November 4, 1881. His father, Pierre CAUBU was born in France, and his mother, whose maiden name was Isabelle THOMPSON, was born in San Francisco. They had four children born to them: William P. CAUBU attended the public schools of his native city and the University of California, from which he was graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Arts. His professional training was obtained in the Hastings College of Law, from which he was graduated in 1903 with the degree of Bachelor of Laws, and in 1905 he was graduated from the same institution in jurisprudence. He was admitted to the bar and immediately began the practice of his profession, and from then on has been successful in all that he has undertaken. For ten years he gave a very effective service as a member of the force of lawyers in the prosecution attorney's office. While thus serving so much of municipal and other political corruption came to his notice that he has no desire to enter public life, although he can be fully depended upon to fight wrong doing as a private citizen. 5195 | from "The San Francisco Bulletin", 28 Dec 1876 (genealogybank.com) "LOVELY WOMAN" - MISS LUCY MANK SHOOTS TWO OF HER LOVERS LOWELL, Mass., December 19th. - The Supreme Judicial Court, which assembled this this city to-day, has on its hands the trial for murder of a most remarkable and dangerous woman, one who has already been tried and acquitted of the charge of killing one lover, and is now to answer to the charge of murdering a second, the green-eyed monster being the alleged provocation in both instances. The woman's name is variously given a Lulu Martin, Lucy A. Mink and Lucy Mank, and the first murder with which she was charged was committed some three or four years ago in Warren, Maine. The victim was a Dr. Baker, who met his death from a pistol shot in this woman's house, she at the time being generally supposed to be the Doctor's mistress. She was promptly arrested at the time, and a few months later was placed on trial for causing the Doctor's death. The examination lasted several days, and the proceedings were watched with thrilling interest by the whole community, the prevailing opinion being that she was guilty. The Government failed to make out a case, however, and the woman was accordingly acquitted. Nothing more was heard by the public of this woman until a few months since, when she turned up in this city as the defendant and heroine in the murder of another lover, named Charles S. Ricker, last August, for this crime she has just been placed on trial. On the day of th tragedy the woman wrote a note to her victim, asking him to see her in her room in the evening. On the same day she went to a gunshop here in Lowell, and had a revolver cleaned and some new cartridges supplied, and on the same evening a pistol shot was heard in her room, and when the other occupants of the house went to investigate the cause, they found that her lover had been fatally shot. Her friends at the time set up the theory of accident, claiming that she was actuated by jealousy of another woman, and having failed in an attempt at reconciliation she attempted to shoot herself and that her fried, in preventing suicide, was himself accidentally shot by a misdirection of the weapon. William B. Gale, of Waltham, who was assigned as counsel for the alleged murderess, was quite taken back when he went to see her a few day since in relation to matters her defense. She politely but coolly told him that she had not sent for him, and she wanted no lawyer to intercede for her. She furthermore said that if at the trial he assumed to act for her she would tell the judge and jury that had acted without her authority and in opposition to her wishes. She positively refused to relate any incident of the tragedy, choosing to keep her own confidence, on the ground that she did not need Mr. Gale's services or the assistance of any one else. She said she made no objection to him personally, but did not want to talk to him as a lawyer, and during the entire interview was cool and courteous. When brought into court this morning the condition of affairs was explained. and the wheels of justice are temporarily blocked in consequence. The woman is by no means insane, and the motive for her singular conduct is a mystery. The presiding Judge and counsel on both sides agreed to a delay, and the fair murderess was remanded to jail pending a decision how to proceed. The case is attracting considerable attention from the fact that the defendant's antecedents are a mystery, and the two men whom she is reputed to have murdered were prominent in their respective communities. | Baker, Peyton Randolph (I16794)

5196 | from "The San Francisco Bulletin", 7 Feb 1878 (genealogybank.com) Edward I. Armstrong, one of the Pioneers of California, died on Wednesday morning, at 2224 Howard street, in his 67th year of his age. Mr. Armstrong was widely and favorably known as proprietor of several of the leading hotels of this State and Nevada. He was a native of New York, but immigrated to Texas in 1833, and volunteered in the Texan army, at that time fighting for Independence of the State with Mexico, but before he had opportunity to perform much service that independence was achieved. Deceased came to California in 1850, and established himself in a hotel at Sacramento. He kept the St. Nicholas, a first-class hotel in this city, for several years subsequent to 1854. He kept the International Hotel in Virginia City about 1865 or 1866. In 1859 he was joint partner with the late Samuel Todd in the management of the Rassette House. He was also at one time proprietor of the old Niantic Hotel. Of late years, Mr. Armstrong, like many other old Californians, had been laboring under discouragement, owing to reverse of fortune, and became entirely disconnected with business pursuits; but to the last, amid all of his misfortunes, bore an unblemished character, and, departing, has left his friends the kindly remembrance of his worth as a man and a citizen during his more prosperous days when his many acts of generosity and benevolence made him a conspicuous man. | Armstrong, Edward Irwin (I25431)
