The Right Honourable James Lorimer Ilsley earned a place in history as Canada?s wartime finance minister. The distinguished Nova Scotia statesman and jurist, who was born in Somerset, Kings County in 1884, was high on the list to become Canada?s next governor general in 1967.

He became Chief Justice of Nova Scotia in 1950, following an outstanding career in public life and the practice of law. As a member of the wartime cabinet, he was regarded as one of the greatest finance ministers ever to hold that important portfolio. He also served as minister of justice prior to retirement from politics in 1948.

When asked to enter the federal election campaign in 1926, he flatly refused, showing no interest in politics. His friends, however, refused to take ?no? for an answer, pointing out to him there was a great need for a man of his talents in government, believing that a great future lay before him.

He was elected to the House of Commons as the Liberal candidate for Kings-Hants. He represented Digby-Annapolis-Kings in Parliament for 22 years. He was minister of national revenue in 1935 and finance minister in July, 1940.

In December, 1946, Mr. Ilsley was appointed minister of justice and retired from public life in July 1948. His appointment to the Nova Scotia Supreme Court was made in May, 1948.

Upon his death, in Berwick, flags lowered to half-mast, business establishments closed behind drawn drapes and school children and townspeople lined the streets in silent tribute as the body of the Rt. Hon. Ilsley was borne to its final resting place, beside humble parents in the family plot in the Berwick Cemetery, just three miles from his birthplace. An R.C.M.P. guard of honour stood at the gravesite, as the committal service was conducted by Rev. W. Carey Harvey of Halifax First Baptist Church.

Dignitaries were headed by Hon. H.P. MacKeen, Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia; Hon. Allen J. MacEachern, Nova Scotia?s representative in the federal cabinet; Rt. Rev. W. W. Davis, Bishop of Nova Scotia; Hon. R.A. Donahoe, Nova Scotia Attorney General and Mayor Earle Robinson of Berwick. Members of Nova Scotia?s Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice L.W. Currie, university presidents and other distinguished representatives of the legal profession acted as pallbearers.

Berwick?s Chief of Police John Hallett took the salute for the town as the funeral procession approached on its journey from Halifax. At the gravesite, political leaders and ranking representatives of the legal, business and industrial life of the Valley mingled with citizens of the town and farmers from the surrounding communities as final tribute was paid to the late Chief Justice.

STARTLING INTELLIGENCE.?We haye no words with which to express our feelings in just hearing the startling news that Gamaliel Benjamin, Sheriff of this county, was on Saturday night last bitten with his own dog, since proved to be rabid. The dog suddenly sprang at Mr. Benjamin biting his hand severely. On Sunday tho dog left home and was yesterday morning killed in the village of Almond, after having bitten the colored barber of that place, beside numerous animals. The feelings of Mr. Benjamin and family, as well of his numerous friends, can better be imagined than described. Every effort will of course be used as far as medical aid can avail, to avoid the fatal result usually attending cases of this kind, and we can but hope that so useful a citizeu may still live to prove a bleesiog to his family and community. We learn that the barber, bitten in Almond, had a piece immediately cut out of his arm in the region of the wound.

Charlotte Perkins was born in Annapolis Royal in 1878 and from a long-standing Annapolis Royal family. Her family operated the Queen Hotel downtown from 1873 and then moved to take over the Hillsdale House in 1895. She founded the annual flower show in 1924 which continues to this day and took great pride in organizing the annual "greening" (decorating) of St. Lukes Anglican Church for Christmas. She was a charter member of the local chapter of the Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire and is seen here cutting the 30th anniversary cake at the Community Centre on the 27th of November, 1947. She never married, being a resolute spinster, and living her later years with her sister, Bessie O'Dell. She died in 1964 in Annapolis Royal. Charlotte Perkins was a charter member of the Historical Association of Annapolis Royal, often making presentations at their meetings. At their quarterly on the 17th of September, 1951, Charlotte Perkins presented "The Old Pictures of Annapolis Royal". In thanking her the President of the Historical Association that evening paid tribute to her delightful radio voice, pleasing humour and wonderful knowledge of old Annapolis Royal, which you will also enjoy. Her script and glass slides were retained by the HAAR and a sound recording of the event was made by Allan Hicks of Bridgetown. All this material is now held at the Archives of the Annapolis Heritage Society and has been used for this virtual strolling through the centuries of Annapolis Royal.

Walter Gay Stebbins, son of the Hon. John M. Stebbins (Dartmouth Coll. 1848) and Harriet C. (Haile) Stebbins, was born in Springfield, Mass., on June 4, 1865. For a year after graduation he studied law with his father, and the next year he spent also in Springfield, engaged partly in real-estate business. In September, 1888, he entered the Harvard Medical School, in Boston, and in 1892 he received the degrees of A.M. and M.D., cum laude. He served as surgical house officer from July, 1891, to January, 1893, at the Boston City Hospital, and in his work there showed a good surgical judgment and scrupulous attention to the comfort of his patients. After this he was house-officer at the Boston Lying-In Hospital from March to September, 1893. After a brief vacation he returned to the City Hospital on September 26, as a substitute for an absent officer for a few weeks, at the expiration of which time he expected to sail for Europe. Almost immediately after his arrival at the hospital he contracted diphtheria from a patient, from which he died there on October 8, in his 29th year. His industry and interest in his profession were full of unusual promise.
